Spirit Taekwon-Do Kelburn
Spirit Taekwon-Do Kelburn
Taekwon-Do, fitness and self-defence for kids and adults in Kelburn and Northland, Wellington

Why train in Kelburn
Spirit Kelburn trains three nights a week across two neighbouring suburbs: Monday and Wednesday at Kelburn Normal School, and Tuesday at Northland Memorial Hall. Juniors have two nights to choose from and seniors have three, so training fits around school, work and the rest of the week.
The club is a mix of children, teenagers and adults of every rank. On Wednesdays the class is run by Mrs Leaine Devine alongside her three daughters, a family who joined Spirit together in 2015 and 2016.
Your first night starts before you step on the mat. We greet you, show you where your shoes and bag go, and explain how the class runs. An experienced student partners you through the warm-up and the first few techniques, and you train at your own pace from there. A uniform can wait until you are getting ready for your first grading.

Class times
Kelburn trains Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Juniors and seniors have their own classes on Wednesday, and the Tuesday class in Northland is open to every student.

Who it's for
Kids
Children can start from age 7. Juniors train on Wednesday at 6:15pm and are welcome at the Tuesday class in Northland too, so two nights a week is easy to manage. Alongside the kicks and blocks, they practise focus, respect and self-control in every class.
Adult beginners
Simon started again at white belt at 30, which is exactly where every new adult starts here. You learn the basics step by step, train at a level that suits you, and build fitness and practical self-defence as you go.
Families and returning students
Parents and older children can train in the same senior class, each at their own level, and family discounts apply when more than one of you joins. Former Spirit students are always welcome back on the mat.
What our students say
“I love Taekwon-Do not only for the exercise that it provides, the physical discipline that it requires, and the skills that it teaches, but actually for the community that comes with it. I've been a member of Spirit Kelburn for over 8 years, and the thing that has kept me coming back year after year is the people; the club is such a supportive and welcoming community for students of all skill levels. Instructors and peers alike make for a fun and encouraging environment that challenges us and allows everyone to learn from one another.”
