Taekwon-Do for beginners

We now take new beginner students individually rather than in group classes.

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step

We know walking into a martial arts class for the first time can feel intimidating. Our job is to make that first step feel safe, supported, and surprisingly fun… for you and your kids, even if you have never set foot on a training mat before.

From the moment you arrive, we make you feel welcome, understand where to stand, and how to follow along. No prior fitness, flexibility, or experience is expected. Every class is structured so beginners can ease in at their own pace, learn the basics clearly, and leave feeling more confident than when they walked through the door.

What beginners can expect

  • A warm hello and clear guidance from the moment you walk in
  • A black belt helping you find your feet
  • Simple, beginner-friendly movements that anyone can try
  • A focus on respect, effort, and fun over “being good at it”
  • A supportive community that celebrates small steps and big smiles

Why beginners love starting Taekwon-Do here

When someone starts Taekwon-Do, they are doing far more than learning how to block, kick, or punch. They are stepping into a structured environment that helps shape their confidence, mindset, and physical abilities over time

Adults, teens, and kids alike absorb these skills and habits quickly, and the more consistently they train, the more naturally these positives flow into everyday life at home, at work, and with friends.

  • Full‑body fitness & focus
  • Simple, step‑by‑step learning
  • Real‑world self‑defence skills
  • Calm confidence in daily life
  • Discipline, respect, and routine
  • Supportive, family‑friendly community

What our students say

“The beginners class is a great opportunity for those who are wanting to give Taekwon-Do a go but don’t know where to start. I had been filled with self doubt but Mr Kraiger was a supportive teacher and soon had me feeling confident with what we were doing and I was amazed with the simplicity of the moves we were being taught.

I found the Beginners Class very rewarding and I was able to walk into my new school with excitement and my newly found confidence.”

Student

“I enjoy Taekwondo because I’ve learned new skills and it helps me calm my mind. Our club, Spirit Kelburn, is a friendly and fun group of kids learning together.

Through Taekwondo, I’ve gained self-defence skills, an enjoyable Wednesday evening routine, and improved my focus and discipline.”

Try something new, even if you feel like a fish out of water

Taekwon‑Do often looks intense from the outside, yet your first step in feels very different here. Whether you come on your own, with a partner, or as a family, you are treated as a beginner who is meant to be here, not someone who has to “catch up.” Every session is structured so new students know where to stand, what to try first, and when to take a breather. You leave feeling lighter, more capable, and pleasantly surprised at what you managed to do in just one class.

From first class nerves to real confidence

That very first class can feel nerve‑wracking. New space, new faces, lots of movement. So we keep your early steps simple and clear. You start with basic stances, easy movements, and short combinations you can actually remember. We pair you with a friendly, experienced student (often a black belt “buddy”) who quietly shows you what to do next and answers questions. As you progress through belts, you see visible proof that you are improving, one small, achievable step at a time.

Support, guidance, and progress at your own pace

Our classes are mixed, which means beginners, advanced students, adults, teens, and families often share the same space… and that is exactly why we put extra care into looking after new people. Instructors check in on you, adjust exercises to your level, and make sure you never feel lost or left behind. You build fitness, balance, and practical self‑defence skills gradually, with plenty of encouragement and zero expectation to be “good” on day one. The goal is simple: help you enjoy the process so you want to come back.

Not at all. Most people who walk through our doors are starting from scratch. We design our classes so beginners and experienced students can train side by side without anyone feeling lost or “in the way.” When you arrive for your first class, we explain exactly how the session works and what you can expect. You are introduced to your instructor and paired with a friendly, experienced student (often a black belt “buddy”) who quietly shows you where to stand, how to line up, and what to do next.

We start you with simple movements, clear demonstrations, and lots of repetition so nothing feels rushed. You are encouraged to work at your own pace, take breaks when you need them, and ask questions at any time. Our goal in your first few sessions is not perfection, it is comfort and small wins, so you leave thinking, “I can actually do this.”

Your first class starts before you even step on the mat. We greet you, show you where to put your shoes and belongings, and walk you through the layout so you are not guessing where to go. You will learn how to bow in, how we line up, and a few simple courtesies that keep everyone safe and respected.

Once class begins, you will join the warm-up, which is a mix of gentle mobility, light cardio, and basic movements that anyone can follow. Your black belt buddy or instructor will stay close, offering quick tips and quiet guidance so you always know what is happening. You will try a few foundational techniques like simple stances, blocks, and basic kicks, all broken down step by step. By the end of class, you will know how a session flows, what is expected, and what you can work on next time. Most beginners are surprised at how quickly those first nerves fade.

Absolutely. You do not need to “get fit first” to begin. Training is scaled to your current ability, not some imagined ideal. Many of our beginners start with low fitness, limited flexibility, or old injuries, and we adjust for that from day one.

Your instructor will show you how to modify movements, when to slow down, and how to build strength and mobility gradually. You are always free to rest when you need to, step to the side for a drink, or ask for an easier variation. Over time, you will notice your stamina, balance, and flexibility improving as a natural result of consistent training. The most important step is simply showing up and allowing us to guide you at a pace that feels safe and sustainable.

Safety is at the core of how we teach. Techniques are introduced in a logical order, starting with control, balance, and proper form long before speed or power. Beginners practice in a supervised, structured environment with plenty of space and clear instructions, so there is no chaotic “free-for-all.”

Your black belt buddy and instructors watch closely, correcting posture and technique so you are training in a way that protects your joints and muscles. Contact work, if any, is introduced gradually and with strict rules so you always know what is happening and why. You will never be pushed into doing something you are uncomfortable with. We would rather you leave class feeling safe, respected, and confident than pushed too far, too fast.

Feeling nervous is completely normal, and we take that seriously. From the moment you get in touch, we aim to remove as many unknowns as possible so the experience feels predictable and manageable. You will know what to wear, when to arrive, who to ask for, and what your first class will look like.

Once you are here, we keep communication clear and friendly. Instructors check in with you, your black belt buddy stays nearby, and you are never singled out or put on the spot. Progress is measured in small, achievable steps: remembering a stance, improving a kick, or simply feeling more relaxed in the space. Over time, many beginners notice their confidence growing not only in class, but in everyday life, because they have proof that they can step into something new, feel supported, and succeed.

What our students say

“Having no martial arts experience, I found the beginners sessions very informative and pitched just right to bring complete novices ‘into the fold’ with no pressure to take it any further than you wanted. The basic techniques and tenets we learnt were useful and the instructors were very good at working with beginners.”

“If you are interested in taking Taekwon-Do lessons, but you’re not sure if it’s right for you, the beginners class is the place to be. The content and pacing was just about perfect, and has made the transition to full classes considerably easier to achieve.”

“Before starting the beginner classes I felt a little nervous having never done anything like it before; but I walked away from my first lesson thinking ‘how good was that!’. Taekwon-Do is challenging, hard work and rewarding but most of all real good fun. I always look forward to the next session.”
