Taekwon-Do for kids

Physical activity, children’s self defence & life skills empowerment

Empower your child: the heart of Taekwon-Do for kids

Imagine your child, not just confident and physically fit, but also equipped with life skills that will serve them for years to come. This isn’t just a dream, it’s what Taekwon-Do can offer.

As a martial art, Taekwon-Do is about more than just kicks and punches; it’s about shaping young minds and bodies to be strong, respectful, and resilient.

Why starting Taekwon-Do early matters

When children begin Taekwon-Do young, they are not just learning how to defend themselves. They are stepping into a journey that shapes their character, confidence, and physical abilities for life. Kids absorb skills like sponges, and the earlier they begin, the more naturally these habits show up in their daily lives.

  • A holistic approach to body and mind
  • Increased coordination and balance
  • A deep sense of empowerment
  • Real self-defence skills, used responsibly
  • Strong discipline and genuine respect

What our students say

“Spirit Taekwondo has helped me gain confidence in myself and my abilities. The instructors’ attention to details and encouragement has helped me push through my personal barriers.

It has also been great training with my son, we shared some fun in class, helped each other with our techniques and generally build a closer relationship”

Carol (Family / Mum)

“My 13 year-old son started Spirit Taekwon-Do Newlands when he was 12. He loves going to every class, even when the weather is freezing for stepping outside at 7pm.

A special thanks to the teachers who taught him really well. He was so excited to receive his double-pass on his very first grading test. I highly recommend this school for anyone looking to build confidence and learn this art.”

Ambika Sharma (Parent)

What your child actually learns in class

In our kids Taekwon‑Do program, every drill has a purpose. Children learn simple, age‑appropriate stances, blocks, and strikes that build balance, coordination, and confidence from the ground up. As they repeat these basics, they also practice focus, patience, and listening skills.

We put a strong emphasis on control and safety. Kids are taught how to use their power responsibly, when to walk away, and when to protect themselves. Partner drills and pad work give them a safe way to experience impact, manage nerves, and build trust with others.

Alongside the physical skills, your child practices discipline and respect in every class: lining up, bowing, waiting their turn, and encouraging teammates. Over time, these habits carry over into school, home, and everyday life, so they are not just “doing martial arts,” they are becoming more confident, considerate young people.

Most children are ready to start Taekwon-Do from around 8 years old. In some cases, a keen 7 year old can begin, especially when they show good focus and are excited to learn.

Every child is different, so it helps to think about their confidence, focus, and ability to follow instructions in a group setting. If you are unsure, the best next step is to chat with the instructor and arrange a trial class so we can assess readiness together.

  • Start at the ideal age to build confidence, focus, and coordination faster
  • Give your child a structured outlet that channels energy into discipline, not disruption
  • Help your child feel part of a positive peer group that supports effort and good behaviour
  • Use a no-pressure trial class so you can see your child’s smile and confidence grow before you commit

Taekwon-Do stands out for its dynamic, powerful kicking techniques and emphasis on speed, agility, and precision. Training in Taekwon-Do gives your child experience in a fast, exciting style that builds balance, coordination, and confidence with every class.

What really sets it apart is the philosophy behind the moves. Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit are woven into every lesson. Your child is not just learning how to kick and block, they are learning how to carry themselves with respect, make better choices, and keep going when things get hard.

So Taekwon-Do becomes more than an after-school activity. It becomes a powerful way to shape your child’s character, mindset, and self-belief for life.

For real progress, consistency beats everything. Our kids train twice a week, and we strongly recommend coming to every class so your child can build confidence and skills without losing momentum.

Two focused sessions each week are the sweet spot: often enough to see fast improvement, without clashing with school, homework, and family time.

  • See faster progress as your child builds on last lesson’s skills instead of starting over each week
  • Turn Taekwon-Do into a positive routine that boosts discipline, focus, and follow-through
  • Help shy or hesitant kids settle in quicker through regular contact with the same classmates and instructor
  • Give your child the best shot at earning new belts, mastering techniques, and feeling genuinely proud of their achievements

Choosing the right Taekwon-Do school can be the difference between your child “trying a class” and your child truly thriving.

A quality dojang feels positive the moment you walk in. Students are encouraged, instructors are engaged, and you can see kids listening, learning, and still having fun. The best schools care just as much about character as they do about kicks.

Here are some powerful signs you have found the right place for your child:

  • A warm, welcoming atmosphere where every child is included and encouraged
  • Clear communication about expectations, timetables, gradings, and events
  • A structured curriculum that teaches both self-defence skills and life skills
  • Genuine testimonials and word-of-mouth praise from other parents and students
  • Chances to grow through gradings, seminars, and (if they want) competitions or demonstrations
  • Instructors who keep learning and improving, and expect the same from their students
  • Obvious respect on the floor… students listening, bowing, and supporting each other, regardless of rank or age

Trust your instincts when you visit. If you and your child feel safe, motivated, and inspired, you are likely in the right Taekwon-Do school

For our dedicated kids classes, parents stay off the floor so instructors can keep the group focused and give every child their full attention. If your child is 9 or older and keen to train alongside you, they are welcome to join our senior class (generally 10+).

This is where parents and older kids can train in the same session, each working at their own level. Here’s how you can still be actively involved, even if you are not in the kids class:

  • Watch from the sidelines so you can see exactly what your child is learning
  • Use what you see in class to encourage practice, respect, and discipline at home
  • Train yourself in our senior classes and share the “we’re both doing Taekwon-Do” experience
  • Show your child their training matters by turning up, watching, and cheering them on

Even when you are just observing, your presence is powerful. It tells your child you value their effort, you are proud of them, and you are on this journey with them.
